There were rumors that the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) might be visible in the lower 48. I never expected to see the Aurora in my hometown so when I received the notification that the KP index had spiked, I immediately grabbed my camera and drove to a spot I knew would have little light pollution and might make for a good composition. When I arrived, you could just faintly see a purple-ish glow on the horizon. The exposure from the camera was better able to pick up the intense glow the Aurora was causing. I stayed for about an hour watching the glow intensify and captured this image. One of many in the series.
